Trixie at Six Months Trixie is now more than six months old. In dog years she is considered a teenager and surely she behaves like one. One day she is the best dog imaginable, and the next a real menace. When we go for walks, to the market, or to other busy places she behaves usually very well and doesn't mind waiting patiently when we stop for a cup of coffee or even dinner in a garden restaurant. The other day when I was out of town, Olaf took her to work. She lay right in front of his office, watched the surroundings, and played with everybody who came. Wherever we go she is the center of attention. "What a cute dog." "What breed?" "May I pet her!" "She is sooo soft" are comments we hear constantly. The other day a man stopped his car in the middle of the road, not caring about the oncoming traffic, and quizzed Olaf about Trixie. In fact we now recommend PWDs for singles who look for personal contact. We love watching her play. She throws her toys around and runs after them, or she holds them between her paws, rolling onto her back, holding them above her head, shaking them, or chewing on them. The other day we played together with her pink rubber ball. I rolled it to her and she rolled it back to me. Sometimes she sleeps like a baby with her stuffed teddy bear right next to her head. Last week she scared us quite a bit. She did not feel well, moving sluggishly. She did not eat, and slept most of the time. She followed us around the house, cuddled right next to us and closed her eyes. First we thought it was due to something she ate. However, when this behavior continued for more than two days, we went to the vet. He found a growth on the left-hand side of her neck. It was x-rayed, the pictures were sent to a specialist and a tissue sample was taken for analysis in a lab. Luckily it turned out it was only an inflammation. Right after she had a day of antibiotics, she was her old self again. Indeed, she was so active as if she had to release the energy bottled up during the time she was ill. In the meantime she regained her old weight of a good 30 lbs. Trixie loves to take walks. She looks forward to meeting other dogs, is not afraid of the fiercest-looking breeds, and pulls us almost off our feet to get close to them. |
